Key Differences Between Semaglutide & Tirzepatide
1. Drug Class and Mechanism of Action
- Semaglutide: GLP-1 receptor agonist. Mimics a gut hormone that regulates appetite, blood sugar, and cravings.
- Tirzepatide: Dual agonist targeting GLP-1 and GIP receptors. Enhances GLP-1 effects with GIP for improved blood sugar control and weight loss.
2. Efficacy in Weight Loss
- Semaglutide: Results in 15-16% average weight loss.
- Tirzepatide: Yields 14-18% weight loss and may offer greater overall effectiveness in clinical practice.
3. Side Effects
- Both medications can cause nausea, vomiting, and digestive discomfort.
- Semaglutide: May have more pronounced gastrointestinal side effects.
- Tirzepatide: Generally reported to have fewer severe side effects due to its dual mechanism.
4. Dosage and Administration
- Semaglutide: Gradually titrated from 0.25 mg/week to 2.4 mg/week (e.g., Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus).
- Tirzepatide: It starts at 2.5 mg/week and increases to 15 mg/week (e.g., Mounjaro, ZepBound).
5. Choosing the Right Medication
- Decisions depend on health goals, medical history, and financial factors (e.g., insurance coverage).
- Both carry a black box warning for thyroid C-cell tumors, with use contraindicated for individuals with certain medical conditions.
6. Switching Between Medications
- Switching requires careful management by a licensed provider to adjust doses and ensure tolerance.
- Both medications are effective tools for managing diabetes and weight loss, but consultation with a healthcare provider is essential to determine the best option for your unique needs.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Will I get my money back if the program doesn’t work?
Yes—our Results Money Back Promise states that if you don’t lose at least 10% of your body weight within one year on our program, you’re eligible for a refund (less the non-refundable $150 cost of the first doctor visit). See terms here. We back this up with accurate, clinically reviewed data proving how successfully our members on GLP1 medications lose, on average, 15% of their body weight.
2. What kind of medications will be used?
We can prescribe a variety of GLP-1s such as Wegovy®, Ozempic®, Mounjaro™, or Saxenda®. All GLP-1s are clinically tested, stimulant-free and non-habit forming. GLP-1s address the underlying biology that is most important for weight loss and help lower your set point or the weight your body fights to stay at. GLP-1s are powerful, naturally occurring hormones made by your gut that send signals to your brain to decrease your appetite, improve your metabolic system, and regulate your digestion to feel full longer and maximize nutrient absorption. Regardless of which medication you’re prescribed, our commitment to all of our members remains the same—10% weight loss or your money back (see terms).
3. Who is eligible to join the Gaya Wellness Weight Loss Program?
- Between 18 – 64 years of age.
- BMI that is >30, or >27, with one or more of the following metabolic conditions: diabetes, pre-diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, obstructive sleep apnea, or PCOS.
- Not pregnant or breastfeeding.
- No active substance abuse problem, an active eating disorder (e.g., anorexia or bulimia), type 1 diabetes, cancer, recent bariatric surgery (within the past 18 months), active gallbladder disease, a history of pancreatitis in the past six months, or a history of medullary thyroid cancer (MEN syndrome).
- Live in the United States.
4. What Kind of Side Effects Might Occur?
For those who do, nausea is the most common, and this typically resolves over the first few weeks of being on the medication. If you experience any side effects, you can contact your medical team directly for support. Less than 5% of people discontinued GLP-1 medicines because of side effects. However, in the infrequent case that you have side effects that make you ineligible to participate in the program, you’d be offered the choice to stay in the program with a non-GLP-1 medication called metformin (if clinically appropriate) or to partially refund your program based on the amount of time you were able to participate.
5. Can I use my HSA or FSA to cover the membership cost?
You can use your HSA or FSA funds for the program membership. Select the “billed once” option ($1188) to do so. You can split your payment between two cards if you don’t have the total program cost on your HSA or FSA card.
6. Do These medications interact with any of my other medications?
Your doctor will review your required lab work and entire health history and can answer any questions you might have about medication interactions during your initial video doctor visit. GLP-1s can be safely taken with other common prescription medications—including those for blood pressure, thyroid, and diabetes—and have no contraindications with other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
7. Does The Membership Fee Include The Cost Of The Medication?
The Membership Fee does not include the cost of medication. It covers the cost of coaching and program access to ensure you lose weight safely and effectively. The cost of GLP-1 medication can range from an out-of-pocket cost of $700-$1200 for a 1 month supply. Your Insurance May cover this medication’s cost if you meet their criterion for using GLP-1 Agonists. We will submit the needed paperwork to help you determine if your insurance will cover your medication costs so that you can make an informed decision. We also do our best to help our exclusive members get the authorization they need to become approved.
